Welcome to www.boukephalos.com, a group of web pages edited by E. Alexander Gerster.

Boukephalos was the horse of Alexander the Great. Philonicus, a Thessalian, offered to sell Boukephalos to King Philip II of Macedon, Alexander's father, but Philip commanded that the steed, which was unmanageable, be led away. Young Alexander offered to mount the horse, and to the astonishment of all, the animal willingly submitted to his guidance, though it had never before obeyed a rider. Alexander then conceived such affection for Boukephalos that he never rode any other horse and Boukephalos was never mounted by any other rider. The horse died in 326 BC, when Alexander was in India, and was buried near the Hydaspes (modern Jhelum) River. In honor of Boukephalos, Alexander founded a city over the grave and called the city Bucephala.

The Greek word BOUKEPHALOS is a combination of Greek words BOUS "bull" and KEPHALOS "headed" which referred to the shape of the steed’s skull, but has also come to mean “bull-headed” in the sense of stubbornness.

"...a page of history is worth a volume of logic." (Oliver Wendell Holmes)

"Hegel was right when he said that we learn from history that man can never learn anything from history." (George Bernard Shaw)

There are several distinct areas to these pages, including:

Singularity: An Online Review is my original book review site, which has been in existence since 1994. Here you will find reviews of books, DVD’s, and related materials in the science fiction and fantasy genres, as well as a few books in the science and mystery areas as well.

Ancient Days – a collection of book reviews covering biographies, general history and historic fiction as related to ancient history. This area also has a separate page dedicated to Ancient Egypt, including links to other web pages as well.

Hephaistion’s Lair is my area dedicated to the graphic design and art side of my personality. Primarily you will find works done by a select few friends and family members. There should also soon be links to some of my original fiction as well.

Some of my additional reviews can be found at  E. Alexander Gerster's Reviews at Amazon.com
